Poem Homes is a design-build company focused on reducing resource use in new home construction and showing how living in a smaller, more modest home makes way for a more satisfying life.
Sustainable design and connection to the natural world has inspired my life and my work since graduating from Madison College in 1986 with a degree in Architectural Technology. After gaining experience in the field as a carpenter, land surveyor, estimator, cabinet salesperson, and draftsman, I founded Amber Westerman Building Design in 1998.
Twenty years later and with over 100 new homes and over 500 total design projects under my belt, I became a Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor. I’m currently seeking certification as a Sustainable Building Advisor through HeatSpring. I enjoy presenting workshops on design topics at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s annual Energy Fair. For the 2019 Fair on June 21-23, I have two topics: “Extreme Downsizing” about my experience living in an off-grid cabin, and “Follow the Build” about the Poem Home described in these pages.
The first Poem Home is currently under construction at 770 North Westmor Street in Spring Green, Wisconsin, a beloved village along the Wisconsin River in the heart of the Driftless Region. I invite you to visit me and my crew as we build the first-ever net-zero home in our community!
