On the Boards

On the Boards is designer-speak for “whatcha working on?” I’ve been doing this job long enough that I started out actually drafting with paper and pencil on a wooden drafting board. Everyone did, until around 1985 when computers with CAD (computer aided design) software began creeping into the back corners of architectural offices. That was the year I graduated from college, and pencil-and-paper draftsman were still in demand. I managed to skirt around any updating until the housing crash of 2008 when worked slowed to a halt and I finally decided it was time to pick up a mouse to see what all the fuss was about.

I’d passionately loved the art and craft of hand drafting: the feel of the tools, the smell of paper and lead, the arcane language of line weights and hatching techniques and symbols, the mastery of writing in those chunky block print letters so prized by architects…..but once I got the hang of CAD and developed my own personal style with it, I was hooked. It became, in many ways, a better way to explore my ideas and most certainly a better way to communicate with my clients, their builders, and code officials.

Read on to find out what’s on my mind, events coming up that may be of interest to you, green-building industry happenings, preliminary sketches of my current projects, and pictures of recently completed design or construction work. I truly appreciate your interest. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or suggestions.
